Why Does Literacy Feel So Hard?

You’ve got training, experience, and a real passion for helping students. But when it comes to structured literacy, you're still second-guessing yourself. Teaching structured literacy isn’t about guessing. It’s about having a plan (and a coach to walk you through it).

What is Literacy Coaching?

Literacy coaching is a personalized, expert-led support system for educators using Orton-Gillingham or other structured literacy methods. Whether you’re brand-new or years into your practice, coaching helps you sharpen your instruction and feel confident in your skills.

We offer:

  • One-hour, one-on-one virtual coaching sessions with a Fellow-in-Training (FIT)

  • One-hour group coaching sessions for collaboration and shared problem-solving

Coaching is for you if:

  • You’ve been trained in OG but aren’t sure how to apply it in real classrooms

Literacy Coaching: Frequently Asked Questions

  • A literacy coach supports educators by helping them improve reading and writing instruction. They provide personalized guidance, model effective teaching strategies, and offer feedback to help teachers strengthen their structured literacy practices. Coaches work side-by-side with teachers to ensure every student gets high-quality, research-based instruction.

  • Effective literacy coaching should include:

    1. Collaboration – Working closely with teachers to meet their needs

    2. Modeling – Demonstrating effective literacy instruction

    3. Observation and Feedback – Providing actionable input on instruction

    4. Data-Informed Decision-Making – Using student data to guide coaching

    5. Sustained Support – Offering ongoing guidance and follow-up

  • The primary goals of a literacy coach are to improve literacy instruction, build teacher confidence, and increase student achievement. They help educators implement structured, evidence-based reading strategies and support professional growth through ongoing collaboration, reflection, and goal setting.

  • A reading specialist typically works directly with students who need targeted reading intervention. A literacy coach works with teachers—helping them improve their instruction across classrooms. While both roles support literacy, coaches focus on adult learning and professional development, while specialists focus on student remediation.

Guesswork won’t get the results you want. But a literacy coach will.
