Beware The Claw Game!

The Beware the Claw card game is a fun, fast-paced way to reinforce <au> and <aw> vowel team concepts! Players take turns drawing cards and reading <au> and <aw> cards from the deck until they draw “The Claw!” Then, all their cards must be discarded and they must start collecting again. When all the cards are drawn the player with the most cards in their hand wins!

To play this game, players should be familiar with the following concepts:

  • What is a Vowel Team?

  • The <au> and <aw> Vowel Teams and the sounds they represent

  • Decoding one- and two-syllable words

The 3.5” x 2.5” card deck contains:

  • 54 word cards

  • 7 “Claw” cards

  • 2 Instructional cards

Tips for Instructional Use

  • Edit the deck removing any words containing concepts that have not yet been introduced to the players

  • For younger, or newer, players start with only one-syllable words.

  • Gradually add more complex words as skills improve.

  • Encourage players to read aloud clearly and use decoding strategies.

  • Discuss the sounds made by <au> and <aw> to build automaticity.
